WhatsApp Groups - Redesign

Project overview

This project came from a personal frustration, one that I go through frequently. As someone who loves to declutter, and cant leave messages unread on WhatsApp, it frustrated me how many inactive groups I had, and then to have to manually go and delete them one by one. I wish I didn't have to spend the time Marie Kondo-ing my WhatsApp.

And that's how this idea came up, one fine evening, when me and my brother were chatting over tea. We'd just come back from a trip and now our WhatsApp had 3 separate groups for one single trip. All of which were now useless, except for the few pictures we would've liked to have in our phone.

The Idea

Here's what I thought of, as a simple solution - allow the admins of the group to auto-dissolve a group after a set amount of time. This would be just like any other setting that a group can have, such as disappearing messages or only allow admins to sent messages. It could be just as easy and straight-forward.

How i went ahead -

  1. Sat down and mulled over the idea, obviously. Allowed myself to actually think about it and understand the technicalities of it. I went through the flows and what kind of options might be needed by the user.

  1. Pulled up my Figma files and a bunch of screenshots from WhatsApp - bringing back a personal favorite activity I did as a beginner - to replicate screens for understanding the UI. It was time to solve a puzzle (something that excites me very much)

  1. Did a step-by-step from creation of groups to setting up permissions. And here's how it flowed -

A quick prototype -

Watch how a simple addition can reduce the clutter and make it easier to manage your groups.
